Ways to Spend a Long Weekend in Edmonton

Ways to Spend a Long Weekend in Edmonton

One of the perks of living in Edmonton is there’s never a shortage of things to see and do! For us, there’s no need to get out of the city for a long weekend – you’ll find plenty to fill your days near home.

This month, you could spend your Family Day long weekend in Edmonton…

You may know of River Valley Adventure Co. and their awesome Segway tours, but did you know you can ride even in the winter!? Test your balance with the Winter Segway Trekking tours. You’ll receive training from a certified Segway trainer if you’re a beginner, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you can revel in the winter wonderland in Edmonton’s River Valley! The River Valley Adventure Co. also offers snowshoe rentals for those looking to keep their feet on the ground. You can opt to take a snowshoe tour with a guide as well to learn more about the area!

Creating An Upcycled Masterpiece

If the new year has stirred up some of your creative energy, you have to attend Family Day at the Reuse Centre! They’re offering a crafting workshop that is family-friendly (of course). You’ll be making “DIY Vision Boards” – a great idea to kick start 2018 with your goals and intentions in mind. The best part? You’ll be using all upcycled and reusable materials.

You probably don’t have to travel far at all to experience a day of laughter and exercise with your family members! The city’s site provides a map of Edmonton recreation centre and pool locations so you can easily find one nearest you. We’re lucky to have numerous quality facilities throughout our city. Swimming, indoor playgrounds, running tracks, and courts to play various sports are just some of the options to choose from; gather up the crew and try something new!

Hitting the Hills

Skiers and snowboarders will want to take advantage of the extended weekend by shredding the slopes. There are a variety of ski hills in the Edmonton area but there are also hills perfect for tobogganing. Remember to bundle up to stay warm (and cushion any potential tumbles!).

Gliding on Ice

If you’d prefer a nice skate, you could revisit your local outdoor rink or pay a visit to the new Victoria Park Freezeway skating path. The city has put together an entire frozen pathway through Edmonton’s River Valley, allowing you to swiftly glide through rows of trees on the 400-metre pilot project. The adventure could become a new family tradition as it grows every year!

Gazing at beautiful works of art at the Art Gallery of Alberta is one fun activity, but when you attend the Qualico Family Day there, you can become the artist! From animal puppets to multi-media creations, the entire family will have a blast participating in craft workshops. Oh, and did we mention? It’s free to attend!

Celebrating Our History

Family Day at the Legislature has been an annual event since 1999. This tradition always involves an array of festivities that celebrate the history of Alberta. Make no mistake, though, this is done through loads of entertainment – games, performances, costumed historical characters, and a photo booth were just some of the activities that took place last year. See what this year has in store and make family memories to last a lifetime!

Simply Unplugging

Up for a little challenge? FCSS Family Day Unplugged is an initiative encouraging families to enjoy quality time with one another – technology-free! Whether you’re participating in one of the events above, or staying home for some unplugged activities like baking, board games, or snowman building, the challenge is to go at least 2 hours without technology. Make it a competition and see how long you can unplug as a group or have a prize for the family member that lasts longest!

The name of the day says it all – this upcoming long weekend is one to be spent with loved ones, so why not treat yourselves to an exciting event? You won’t want to waste the weekend sleeping with so many fantastic options close by!
