Exciting Edmonton Events for February!

Exciting Edmonton Events for February!

Unlike other cities, Edmonton doesn’t bow to the snow. While some people might close their doors and huddle inside their homes when they feel February approaching, the Edmonton community is made of stronger stuff. Here are just five events that celebrate winter the Canadian way!

Boardwalk Ice on Whyte Festival

Date: February 1 – 4

Location: Whyte Avenue & Gateway Blvd

Nothing says winter like a festival of ice. While the biggest draw of the Boardwalk Ice on Whyte Festival is its famous ice sculpting competition, there are plenty of other events and activities to enjoy. For example, you can make winter crafts with your family or hit up the “ice bar” for some chilly spirits. There are also painting parties, musical performances and ice carving lessons for all ages. More than 96,000 pounds of ice are frozen just for this festival, so don’t be shy!

Date: February 9 – 19, 2018

Location: Hawrelak Park

One of Edmonton’s most exciting winter events is the annual Silver Skate Festival. Lasting a full 10 days, it offers things like sleigh rides, ice villages, snowshoe races and interactive theatre performances. There are also marathons and triathlons that will take you into the heart of a true winter wonderland. Fun activities will keep you busy during the day; elaborate fire displays will warm you up by night. Nearly 100,000 people attend the Silver Skate Festival each year, so it’s basically a Canadian tradition.

Uptown Folk Club Winterfest

Date: February 16 – 17

Location: Myhre’s Music

Join dozens of musicians from the U.S. and Canada as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Uptown Folk Club Winterfest in 2018. Not only will you enjoy live performances from both new and established artists, but you’ll also have the chance to play games and win door prizes. All ages are welcome to join the fun, but liquor is served for the adults, so keep an eye on your glass!

Exciting Edmonton Events February! Skiing ImageCanadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival

Date: February 9 – 11

Location: Woodvale Community Facility (starting place)

Known affectionately as the “Birkie,” the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival is a gathering of more than 2,000 skiers who want to test their mettle on powder-fresh slopes. If you’d like to join the fun, there are races and events for all ages and skill levels; if you’d prefer to just cheer on the athletes as they fly across the finish line, grab a cup of cocoa and your warmest parka. You might also be interested in the “Vikings’ Feast,” a buffet dinner that marks the end of the festival where awards are given out to the top competitors.

Flying Canoe Volant

Date: February 2 – 3

Location: Mill Creek Ravine to La Cité Francophone

Offering everything from holiday light displays to horse-drawn carriage rides, this festival is jam-packed with fun things to see and do. If you don’t know where to start, explore the different arenas to partake in food, drink, music and art. If you want to get your heart pumping on a cold winter’s night, take a trip down the snow slide. If you’re there for cultural reasons, listen to the legends and myths of the First Nation and Metis people. There’s so much to experience at the Flying Canoe Volant that you’ll probably need both days to enjoy it all!

These are just a few of the biggest and most exciting things happening in Edmonton during February. There are many more, but this collection of music, art, sports and ice sculpting should be enough to pack your calendar for a few weekends. Have fun!
