You Can Beat Blue Monday

You Can Beat Blue Monday

“Blue Monday” refers to the last Monday in January. It’s considered the most depressing day of the year because of things like the weather, the accumulation of post-holiday debt and the struggle of most people to fulfil their New Year’s resolutions. It’s the apex of the winter blues.

Before you decide to wallow, however, you should know that Blue Monday can be beat! Here are just a few tips for getting past the date with a smile on your face.

There’s a reason why exercise is recommended as a possible treatment for mood disorders and depression. It releases feel-good endorphins in the body, and these can be sorely needed on Blue Monday. You don’t have to complete an entire aerobic routine. Just take a walk, use the stairs or practice your downward dog.

2. Start Your Day the Right Way

Your mood in the morning can set the tone for your entire day, so make an effort to have a good morning on Blue Monday. Don’t hit the snooze button. Prepare your favourite breakfast. Treat yourself to that caramel espresso drink that has too many calories to drink it regularly. These small, positive actions can have ripple effects that influence the rest of your day.

3. Take Tuesday Off

People hate Mondays because Mondays represent the beginning of another work week. If you can take Tuesday off, however, Monday will become your new Friday! In 2018, Blue Monday will fall on January 29th. Ask your boss in advance if you can take a personal day on that date, or go ahead and schedule a three-day vacation for the adjoining weekend.

4. Throw Open the Windows

A few minutes of cold, fresh air will invigorate you. If there’s any sunlight, that will also boost your mood by delivering vitamins to your skin and producing serotonin in your brain. This is an especially useful trick if you find yourself nodding off at your cubicle in the middle of a workday.

5. Wear Your Favourite Clothes

Maybe it’s a dress that flatters your figure. Maybe it’s a suit that makes you look especially debonair. Have your favourite outfit cleaned, pressed, tailored or otherwise prepared for Blue Monday. When you feel good about your appearance, your confidence will extend outwards to other parts of your life, too.

You don’t have to play hooky. There are always ways to squeeze in more bonding time with your kids, especially if you’re making a dedicated effort to do so. How about picking them up from school instead of letting them take the bus? What if everyone went to a movie, museum, playground, arcade or skating rink?

7. Compliment Others

Doing a good thing will make you feel good. If you’re stuck at work, however, you might not have the time to volunteer at an animal shelter or solve world hunger. An easier way of spreading goodwill is to simply smile and compliment others whenever you see them. They’ll appreciate the gesture, and you’ll enjoy the warm glow of altruism.

8. Reach Out to an Old Friend

You’ve been meaning to do it for ages. Here’s your chance. Not only will you get to check it off your to-do list, but if things go well, you might even score a catch-up coffee date with someone who can bring fun memories to a dreary day.

These are just a few ways to get through the most depressing day of the year. It doesn’t have to be a slog! You can make it a great day by utilizing these tips and tricks. Good luck!
