6 Myths About Building in Winter

You don’t have to wait for summertime to build your own home. A lot of the “conventional wisdom” that you’ve heard is false, outdated or just plain made-up! Here are six of the biggest myths of winter home building and why you shouldn’t believe them.

1. It Takes Longer

While it’s true that your builders might have to wait out a cold snap every now and then, it’s no different than having to wait out a heat wave. Extreme temperatures of any kind will put your project on hold. Keep in mind, however, that your builder hates delays just as much as you do, so they’ll be itching to get back to work as soon as the weather starts behaving. Conditions don’t have to be ideal, either: just bearable. Construction crews are used to working around snow, sleet and ice.

Calcium chloride is added to concrete when it’s poured in cold weather. This is a harmless addictive that helps it dry and harden despite any precipitation in the air, and it won’t affect your finished concrete at all. Some people mistakenly believe that calcium chloride weakens things like foundations and walls, but the truth is that all concrete used in home construction projects has to meet strict building codes. It’s a liability issue. Your house will be fine.

3. Winter Wood is Soggy and Weak

In the same vein as the above, it’s a common fear that homes built in winter will be filled with soggy, waterlogged wood. But the exact opposite is true! Since framing wood comes with a certain amount of moisture already inside of it, winter is actually better than summer for drying it out. This is because there’s less humidity in the air. In addition, builders usually have heaters around their construction sites in the wintertime, and that will help to dry the wood too.

4. It’s More Expensive

It’s true that you might have to pay more for things like excavation equipment that can break through snow and ice on the ground. On the flip side, however, you’ll find general materials and labour much cheaper than in springtime when everything is in high demand. Your budget will balance out in the end. All things considered, building a home during the cold months is really no more expensive than building one during a tropical time of year.

5. The Holidays Will Be a Nuisance

Yes, many suppliers and manufacturers shut down for extended breaks over the holidays. But smart builders will plan for this. They’ll gather the materials they need before everything starts closing, and they’ll carefully map out their day-to-day and week-to-week building plans. As for their own holiday breaks, talk to your builders about what they expect. They might be willing to get back to work right after Christmas Day if you’re on a truly tight schedule.

6. Your Construction Crew Won’t Want to Work in the Cold

This is probably the biggest myth of them all. Sure, builders don’t like freezing, but they don’t like sweating either. Uncomfortable weather conditions are just something that they have to deal with as outdoor labourers. On top of that, since November – March is usually a slow time for business, builders can be downright eager for a new project in wintertime when they wouldn’t otherwise be making money. These are just a few myths about building in wintertime. It has its challenges, of course, but it’s not as difficult as you might think. Like everything else about home-building, it just requires patience and planning.
